Beginner Coding

Teacher: Kelly Cunningham
AGES:  8-13
PERIOD 4 (12:30-1:25 PM)
This course is designed as an introduction to computer programming for students who are new to coding. We will primarily use block-based coding while gradually introducing basic JavaScript concepts so students begin understanding how visual coding connects to written programming logic. We will use Code.org as our primary learning platform, and students will need to bring a laptop each week to participate in lessons and projects. Throughout the semester, students will complete guided activities during class and will be encouraged to expand on those projects outside of class as their confidence grows. In addition to weekly exercises, students will work toward a multi-week project that allows them to apply what they have learned and build something more independently as the semester progresses.

Intermediate Coding

Teacher: Kelly Cunningham
AGES: 10-18                      PERIOD 1 (9-9:55 AM)
This course is intended for students who already have some coding familiarity and are ready to work more directly with written programming languages. We will focus primarily on JavaScript, while also introducing Python concepts to help students understand similarities and differences between programming languages. We will again use Code.org as the main platform for instruction, and students will need a laptop each week for coding activities and project work. Students will complete weekly programming exercises and be encouraged to expand and improve their projects beyond class time. As the semester progresses, students will also develop a longer multi-week project, giving them the opportunity to build more complex logic, strengthen problem-solving skills, and gain confidence writing code independently.
